NIMR Automotive, an Abu Dhabi-based subsidiary of Tawazun Holding, will feature its NIMR line of multi-mission vehicles at the 2012 Eurosatory defense and security exhibition in Paris this June. It recently exhibited its wares at the International Armored Vehicles conference in the U.K. for the first time this past February, going so far as to sponsor the conference.
The NIMR vehicles are available in both 4×4 and 6×6 variants. Manufactured in the U.A.E., all are designed for tactical applications in a variety of terrains and urban environments. These roles range from deep infiltration and reconnaissance to border surveillance and logistics, as well as more traditional ones including command vehicle, ambulance, personnel carrier, and weapons platform. They can also serve with police and internal security forces and perform security and riot control functions.
Both the 4×4 and 6×6 chassis can be configured to multiple designs. The 4×4 version can have a single or double cabin, a weapons platform or personnel carrier hull, or even a “station wagon” style of crew compartment. In its lightest soft-skin version, the 4×4 can haul up to three tons of cargo and reach top speeds of about 140 kph. The 6×6 offers short, medium, or long wheel base variants.
Although the vehicles have been tested extensively in a desert environment thanks to the U.A.E.’s location, prototypes were also shipped to Millbrook Proving Ground in the U.K. to see how they could handle wet and muddy terrain.
NIMR prides itself on offering maximum flexibility to its customers, so extensive customization of the base models is available depending on customer requirements. One recent move was to partner with DRS Technologies, which will contribute a package of onboard electronics including 360-degree tactical cameras, communication systems, vehicle monitoring and management software, and command and control (C2) and situational awareness (SA) software suites.
As with most vehicles in this class, the NIMR can mount a variety of weapon systems or remotely-operated weapons stations. Common weapons are 7.62mm and 12.7mm machine guns and 40mm grenade launchers, though the weapons platform variants can mount heavier systems such as antitank missile launchers. Basic armor protection is equivalent to Level 1 STANAG 4569 and offers all-around defense against small arms. Add-on armor kits can bring the vehicle up to Level 3 or 4 STANAG ballistic protection and Level 3a/2b mine protection.
The UAE Ministry of Interior signed a contract for 200 vehicles in March 2012, part of total outstanding orders for over 1,800 units intended for the U.A.E. military. To date over 500 NIMRs have been delivered, with customers that include Libya, Jordan, and Lebanon in addition to the U.A.E.
