Full modularity seems to be fast becoming the norm in modern handgun design, and we are 100% here for it. Obviously, it allows shooters to tailor a pistol to different applications without committing to an entirely new platform. Seeing the handwriting on the wall, Springfield Armory fully embraced the concept its Echelon pistol series.
Now the company is taking it a step further by offering the Central Operating Group (COG) as a standalone component, allowing you to perform a full ground-up Echelon build. The heart of the Echelon platform, the COG is a self-contained, serialized stainless-steel chassis that houses the pistol’s primary fire-control components.
Unlike conventional handgun designs where components are integrated into the frame, the Echelon’s COG can be removed and installed in compatible grip modules. This arrangement makes the COG the legal firearm itself.
Until now, the COG has been available as part of a complete Echelon pistol. With its release as an individual component, Springfield Armory is giving shooters the ability to assemble a customized Echelon without first purchasing a complete firearm.
The concept is straightforward: Start with the COG and select the compatible components that best suit your needs. Grip modules, slide assemblies, barrels, sights, magazines and accessories can be combined to create a pistol tailored to individual preferences and intended applications.
Springfield Armory currently offers several OEM grip module configurations, including compact and full-size—as well as full-size with a compact dust cover, the latter designed to accommodate a 4-inch slide assembly. Builders can pair their preferred grip module with either a 4.0-inch or 4.5-inch slide assembly, available in standard and integrally compensated configurations.
And beyond Springfield Armory’s factory components, a growing selection of aftermarket Echelon-compatible products provides additional customization opportunities.
Of course, the COG is more than simply a means of making the Echelon modular. Its stainless-steel construction and precision machining are designed to deliver the durability and consistency expected of a duty-grade handgun.
Critical trigger components are machined from tool steel, while precision-polished and coated surfaces help reduce friction for smooth trigger take-up and a predictable break.
The COG also incorporates a distinctive second-sear design intended to provide an additional measure of drop safety by helping prevent an unintentional discharge if the pistol is dropped.
Says Steve Kramer, Springfield’s VP of Marketing: “The serialized Central Operating Group established the modular nature of the duty-grade Echelon pistol from the beginning. With the release of the standalone COG, shooting enthusiasts now have the means to craft a pistol configured exactly for their needs.”
The COG’s standalone availability represents a significant expansion of the Echelon ecosystem, providing shooters with a new starting point for building a personalized pistol while retaining the platform’s established operating system.
