Setting up a dedicated gun wall is an idea many firearm enthusiasts have entertained at some point. Even yourself, we’re sure. Whether it’s from recalling high-end armories like HK’s “Gray Room” or from checking out the many well-organized setups in YouTube videos, the appeal of a professional-style display is undeniable.

Tactical Walls, one of the originators of modular wall-mounted firearm displays, is probably most famous for its popular ModWall system. Over the years the company has set the gold standard in this arena, maintaining a reputation for quality and innovation. We got a hands-on opportunity to outfit a wall with the system and we can see why it has become a benchmark for modular gun wall displays.

Unlike traditional slat walls made of wood or particle board, ModWall is constructed from HDPE plastic. This material is lightweight, resistant to chemicals, and won’t scratch or damage firearms. The panels are designed to hold significant weight and come with specialized attachment fixtures to mount both firearms and various accessories. Each panel measures 48 inches wide by 22 inches tall and mounts using pre-dimpled anchor points. Larger 4 x 8’ panels are also available for those looking to cover larger sections of wall space.

Installation requires drilling through the panel and securing it to the wall with the included screws. Mounting the panels to wall studs is recommended for maximum support. For areas where studs aren’t available, drywall anchors can be used, but their weight limits should be considered. With two people working together, the installation of four panels took us about 30 minutes using basic tools like a power drill and screwdriver.

The system allows for flexible installation. Panels can be placed side by side for a wider display or stacked for a taller vertical setup. A side-by-side layout provides an eight-foot-wide space, while stacking panels results in a display measuring 48 inches wide by 44 inches tall. This modularity enables users to tailor the configuration to their available space and storage needs.

Tactical Walls offers a range of accessory mounts for ModWall, making it possible to configure the display in various ways. Available fixtures include general-purpose shelves, rifle and shotgun racks, and strong magnetic holders for pistols and magazines. Other specialized mounts are shaped to accommodate AK, AR-15, AR-10, and pistol magazines, allowing specific firearms to be displayed securely. Additional hangers are available for helmets, vests, and flashlights.

The attachment fixtures secure to the panels using heavy-duty button-head screws that slot into the wall channels. During our installation we found that some hangers required minor adjustments to fit smoothly, as the factory-installed screws were sometimes too tight or too loose. Making small tweaks with an Allen wrench helped dial in the fit, ensuring the hangers easily slid into place and stayed secure.
Once installed, the mounting fixtures can be repositioned along the panel’s slats. The magazine-shaped hangers held firearms securely, and the “Hide-A-Mag” mount allowed pistols and magazines to be attached effortlessly to create a clean, floating display effect.
While the ModWall system is designed for presentation rather than security, it definitely provides a visually striking way to showcase a collection. Those looking for theft prevention should consider Tactical Walls’ other storage solutions. For users strictly focused on aesthetics and organization, ModWall offers a clean and professional way to arrange your firearms and gear.
After investing around $600 and spending an hour and a half on installation and setup, our result was a well-organized and visually appealing gun wall. The biggest challenge now is resisting the urge to expand the display further.
