Lexington, Ken. (March 2022) – Mayor Linda Gorton of Lexington, Kentucky has announced the winner in the “Be the Change” scholarship competition sponsored by GALLS, LLC®, ONE Lexington, and Central Bank. The “Be the Change” scholarship program offers a $20,000 scholarship for a Bryan Station High School senior of color who’s committed to pursuing a career in criminal justice at a Kentucky college or university.
Nola Lewis, a senior at Bryan Station HS, won the scholarship of $20,000.00, renewable every year until she receives her undergraduate degree. Lewis participates in the school’s Homeland, Law & Fire Science pathway, and as of yet, has not chosen her preferred college.
Runner up, Asha Chekanao, also a senior at Bryan Station HS, will receive a one-time scholarship of $10,000.00. Chekanao participates in the high school’s Medical Academy and has chosen Northern Kentucky University as her college.
