Let’s face it. We are living in a digital age, and online purchasing is not going away. With online sales, there’s an automated factor that allows companies to sell cheaper than the local stores. While I still like to give my local mom and pop stores as much business as I can, for some things, it’s just a better deal to go online. Ammo is one of those things. A range visit can burn ammo fast, real fast. If you are active in the shooting sports or just a range junkie than you already know the benefits of buying ammo in bulk. That can mean anything from 100 to 1000 to over 3000 rounds a case. Like any product you can buy online, there are websites you can trust and those you can’t. That’s the trick to online purchases, knowing who to trust. These are some of my favorite places to go looking for deals on ammo. For this article, I’ll be focusing on .223/5.56 ammo, but no matter the caliber you shoot, you can find it online.
Palmetto State Armory came on the scene several years ago with a strong online presence. They have proven to be excellent at offering amazing deals and having great customer service. In the case of ammo, they like to offer deals of bulk ammo with other products. Currently, they have a deal on 1000 rounds of Fiocchi 55 grain .223 Remington and 10 Magpul PMags. The deal runs for $422.80 which comes out to $.29 per round when adding the value of 10 mags at $12.30 per mag. You can never have too many mags, and 1,000 rounds will make a great day at the range. Fiocchi is another name in quality ammo that is considered by several shooters to be better than mil-spec. Accurate and reliable, this is an amazing deal for anyone looking for some quality ammo.
Brownells is known in the gun world as a place to go for anything that relates to firearms. Their prices are good and selection outstanding. They’ve been around for 75 years with no indication of closing shop in the foreseeable future. Currently, they have a deal on Hornady Frontier 55 grain FMJ ammo. If you like to shoot, they have a barrel of 13,889 rounds for $.31 a round. However, if you don’t have $4,239.99 to spend on ammo, the more realistic option is the 150-round box for $50.99. Hornady is known for quality ammo, especially when it comes to rifle ammo. They are loaded in reloadable brass cases, use military-grade box primers and quality Hornady bullets. Reliable and excellent for target shooting, plinking, and competition. There are several options for quantity. However, this is the most economical and realistic.
Cabela’s is another company that’s been around for a long time. They are a name you can trust in the outdoor industry. Currently, they have a deal on Federal American Eagle 55 grain FMJ. It’s a 500 round steel ammo can with 100 round boxes stacked inside. They run for $179.99 or $.36 per round and include an ammo can (a $20 value). It may not seem like much, but those ammo cans are awesome for storing gear like holsters, mag pouches and the like. American Eagle is one of Federal’s name brands and is loaded to Federal mil-Spec standards.
Sportsman’s Guide started in 1976 and is a membered discount outdoor store. With both online and storefront locations, you can trust your money is going to people that will do right by you. If you are a shooter, hunter, or have any hobbies in the great outdoors, then a membership with this company would be a worthwhile investment. It runs $39.99 per year and gives members great discounts on already good prices. Without the membership, you can still see the member prices and get solid deals on the products you’ll need.
Currently, they are running a sale on Federal XM855 420 round ammo cans, with stripper clips, for $148.19 (member price) or $155.99 (non-member price). This comes out to $.35 per round (member price) with a $20 steel ammo can added to it. Federal XM855 is the same 62 grain, green tip ammo the military uses and can be trusted to run reliably. (A note should be made here that green tip ammo is not allowed on some ranges due to its steel core and ability to penetrate some common backdrops and steel targets.) If you are not sure about the value of a membership with Sportsman’s Guide they offer a 30-day free trial membership to check them out. If you are an outdoorsman like me, I’d highly recommend the investment. You’ll save more than enough with a couple of purchases to justify the $39.99 annual fee.
The shooting sports aren’t cheap hobbies. They are, however, a lot of fun. We want our time behind the trigger to last. If you find yourself struggling to find good ammo deals, or maybe a caliber that isn’t common to your local stores, then check out some online sources. A lot of companies run weekly or weekend specials to help you get ammo. Brownells, for example, will run free shipping specials a lot to help mitigate the higher shipping cost of ammo. You can find all kinds of deals online that can truly save. A lot of these companies send their specials via their email list that only you’ll see, so definitely make an account with them. You’ll be surprised at what you find.
