According to Vortex, the new Veil 400 Thermal Monocular is thermal done “the Vortex way.” Meaning it’s simple to run, offers solid performance where it matters most, and image quality that stands clearly above entry-level offerings. And it’s backed by the Vortex VIP Warranty.
Thermal optics have come into the mainstream and in doing so have opened new opportunities for predator and hog hunters, and nighttime observers in general.

But it also comes with hesitation due mainly to complexity and cost. Questions arise concerning what happens if or when the inner electronics fail. The uncertainty is what has kept so many from adopting the technology they otherwise might have.
Designed for close- to mid-range nighttime hunting, the Veil 400 delivers practical performance without overcomplication. It keeps a compact, rangefinder-like form factor that will feel familiar in the hand. Operation is handled with a straightforward three-button navigation system and a menu designed for ease of use.
It’s also notable in that it’s Vortex’s first foray in the thermal market, engineered as a quality optic that’s easy to use and delivers the expected features from a well-known brand.

Key Veil 400 features include 400×300 resolution from a 12μm sensor for sharp detail and a fast refresh when hunting or tracking game. It includes four color palettes so you can switch to match your visual preference or to match your surrounding conditions: White Hot, Black hot, Red Hot, and Multicolor.
The Veil 400 features three viewing modes wherein the user can select between Balanced, Contrast, or Brush to match any targeting condition. Its 2.3x base magnification balances field of view and target ID for nighttime predator and hog hunting.
It also features rechargeable 18650 battery power for easy swap-outs or direct charging via the included USB-C port. It includes photo and video capture using a quick-release button operation to pick out critical moments and allow you to easily share your captures.

And in practice, the Veil 400 proves useful beyond predators or hogs. Recovering downed game after dark, monitoring your property and environs, or navigating unfamiliar ground between dusk and dawn, it’s a versatile thermal tool that’s always handy whenever visibility starts to fade.
And about that warranty. Thermal optics are electronics, and electronics are, well, you know. Many warranties in this arena are backed up by a backlog of fine print, but the Vortex VIP Warranty isn’t. It offers unlimited and unconditional service and support—including electronics.
