Beretta Unveils One-of-a-Kind SO10 Kronos Shotgun

This year marks Beretta’s 500th anniversary, and the company has spent the year crafting some remarkable firearms to celebrate its venerable history. First came the Titan, a one-of-a-kind modern sporting rifle featuring innovative technical and aesthetic solutions.

The company’s latest anniversary creation, the SO10 Kronos, was developed in collaboration with Italian luxury watchmaker La Vallée. Like the Titan, it’s a one-off creation that combines the mechanical precision of Beretta’s flagship SO10 over-and-under shotgun with the craftsmanship and finishing techniques typically reserved for high-end timepieces.

The SO10 Kronos brings together two disciplines that share an appreciation for mechanical engineering, meticulous craftsmanship, and uncompromising attention to detail.

The shotgun’s most striking feature is its redesigned side plates, each incorporating a sapphire crystal window that reveals the intricate internal mechanisms. Accommodating these transparent panels required extensive reengineering of the SO10 action without compromising its structural integrity or functionality.

Each plate is machined from a single piece of high-strength alloy steel and features an innovative opening mechanism operated by twisting a curved safety catch integrated into the crystal assembly. Inside, a gold trilobe spring replaces conventional retaining screws, securing the mechanism’s pins through a shock-resistant retention system inspired by precision watchmaking.

The sapphire windows themselves employ an equally unconventional design. Gold is hand-hammered into specially machined grooves surrounding each opening, creating a semi-rigid retaining interface that secures the crystals while accommodating mechanical stresses during operation.

La Vallée’s watchmaking influence extends to the exposed components, which feature traditional horological finishes including Geneva stripes, polished bevels, gold-plated sleeve bearings, and delicate straight and radial graining. Hand-finished edges and meticulously prepared surfaces give the internal mechanisms the appearance of a high-end timepiece’s mechanical movement.

Beneath its elaborate presentation, the Kronos retains the robust engineering of Beretta’s SO10 platform. Its machined receiver incorporates a rear longitudinal locking bolt aligned with the hinge pins, two additional locking lugs, and trapezoidal barrel locking shoulders, providing the strength and durability typified by a premium Beretta over/under shotgun.

The exterior received equally meticulous attention. English-style gold-inlaid border engraving frames the receiver, while intricate scrollwork adorns the locking shoulders, top lever, and safety catch. A gold-inlaid ‘500 Years’ emblem commemorates the anniversary, while a Grade 5 walnut stock finished with no fewer than 80 hand-applied coats of Tru-Oil allows the wood to shine as brightly as the polished metalwork.

A bespoke black leather presentation case completes the package, featuring a transparent glass panel that displays the shotgun even when the case is closed. Inside, a traditional French-fitted layout lined in black microfiber securely houses the firearm and its accessories.

All in all, it’s more than an exercise in elaborate decoration; the SO10 Kronos incorporates watchmaking-inspired engineering directly into its mechanical architecture. As a singular creation commemorating five centuries of Beretta gunmaking, it represents a distinctive marriage of traditional craftsmanship and unconventional engineering.
