Having a solid soft-shell jacket is a must, well solid probably isn’t the best choice of words. However, this is a critical layer in cold weather and having a garment that is durable, lightweight, comfortable and most important warm is very important. The Helion jacket and Type B pullover to date have become my go to soft shell layers.
What is a soft-shell? As the name implies it’s a soft outer layer, soft meaning that it isn’t usually the most waterproof or durable as the finish is soft, like that of a fleece or sleeping bag. Often times in wet weather one adds a hard shell which is more of a rain coat waterproof like material, or like the tent to the sleeping bag analogy. The soft part of the name is important to the author as comfort and flexibility play a big part in to the wearability of a jacket. In my long term use of the Helion garments I’ve been very impressed.
I first met the Defense Mechanisms crew at the class I hosted when my training company was in it’s prime. Tim, the founder hails from Winona, MN and wasn’t that far of a drive to us in northern Minnesota. When we spoke and got to know each other at class he mentioned they were looking to add a line of tactical and firearms focused gear and garments to his offerings. Known for making very high quality camping, hammock, and outdoor gear I was very interested. When I first checked out the products they were producing I was very impressed.
I have been using the Helion jacket and Type B pullover for some time. The “Type B” designation means the fleece side panels are omitted and the soft material wraps around the entire garment. The original Helion features hard fleece side panels which I really like, this give a little flexibility. The pullover due to the belly kangaroo pocket wouldn’t function very well with the side fleece panels, hence why the type b was born. Having attended a sniper school in Nebraska where the weather changed by the hour or various other classes around the country, the warmth and comfort of the Helion has been great.

Initially I was worried about the soft fabric tearing or damaging, but with numerous flights, classes, range sessions, and recreational use they have held up great. One aspect I love is how light the garments are and how they can be compressed, rolled up and shoved into luggage or cases. This is great as a trainer that travels often not having to worry about stuff taking up too much weight or space.
Available in a variety of colors, sizes, jacket or pullover, hood or collar, you get a soft shell set up to your exact liking. Another welcome addition is the Patrol Features, this adds a badge tab and radio mic tabs, velcro patch panels on the sleeves are also to order. The Helion line up also includes a hood, pants, and booties.
Prices vary from $185-225 and are made to order.

With Aero Precision being in my back yard, it made sense to take a trip down to see their facility and how they manufacturer their products from start to finish. You wouldn’t believe how inconspicuous the AERO facility is. When you arrive, you have to do a double take because the building is nestled into a small industrial complex in Tacoma, WA.
