Dismal Number of New York Gun Owners Comply With SAFE Act Registration.
"…an act of the legislature repugnant to the constitution is void…"
The New York S.A.F.E. Act was passed on January 15th, 2013 in response to the Newtown school shooting.
Among the many new burdens placed on law-abiding gunowners was the requirement to register newly defined "assault rifles."
New York changed the definition of "assault rifle" to mean any semi-automatic rifle with a detachable magazine plus any of the following features:
Registration was set to begin April 15th, 2013 and was supposed to be completed by April 15th, 2014.
But, numbers finally released by the New York State Police show that firearms owners defied the law by a large margin.
Out of one million estimated "assault gun" owners, 23,847 owners registered a total of 44,485 weapons.
That’s noncompliance of an unconstitutional law.
