EXETER, NH –(gunsandtactics.com)– Max Michel, Jr., added to his impressive resume with a victory in the Single-Stack Division at the United States Practical Shooting Association’s Area 6 Championship this weekend in Frostproof, Fla.
A multiple-time champion in the Open Division, Michel plans on shooting select matches in the Single-Stack Division this season.
“SIG SAUER recently came out with their Max Michel signature pistol, the 1911 MAX. This pistol is built from the ground up for competition,” Michel said. “So I thought there’s no better way to demonstrate that than to compete with it.”
The factory-optimized 1911 MAX is about as far as it gets from highly customized Open Division race guns. Large-capacity magazines are gone in favor of 8-round, single-stack magazines. The lack of electronic sights, high-speed race holsters and recoil compensators also require a different approach.
“In practice for this match, I’ve had to learn a lot about breaking down a stage from the Single-Stack perspective,” Michel said. “For example, you have to approach targets in groups of four if you want to keep on schedule with reloads. It’s a totally different mindset and I’m enjoying the new challenge.”
Area 6 is the first USPSA Area championship match of the year for Michel, the only person ever to win all eight Area titles in the same season. His score of 1233.2629 was 54.9583 points better than the runner-up. Michel also won eight of the 12 stages en route to the Single-Stack title finish.
Michel returns to competition next weekend at the United States Practical Shooting Association Area 1 Championship in St. George, Utah.
