“The Defender-XL Micro Red Dot line grows by getting smaller.” So says Vortex Optics, whose Defender-XL in 8 and 5 MOA formats has been embraced by competitive shooters and range-day warriors for the optic’s massive window and crystal-clear glass.
Now, precision-shooting enthusiasts can take advantage of the same proven format with a finer, 2 MOA dot for elevated shooting precision.
While the Defender-XL appeals with the aforementioned large viewing window, which imparts improved peripheral vision and faster target transitions, a smaller dot offers obvious advantages.
A larger dot will obscure more of the target, particularly smaller POAs and while shooting at greater distances. A smaller dot covers less of the target and POA to allow for improved, pinpoint precision.
Other Defender-XL features include that large viewing window with an aspherical, multi-coated lens for a distortion-free sight picture and true color transmittance, a ShockShield polymer insert to provide protection against everyday shock, impacts, vibrations and repeated recoil, and motion activation with a 10-minute auto shut-off to extend battery life.
The Defender-XL is crafted with a tough aluminum housing with an Armortek coating for wear and corrosion resistance. Aggressive Fast-Rack texturing on the unit’s face provides additional purchase to assist in rapid slide racking.
The Defender-XL is powered by a single common CR2032 battery allowing for a runtime of up to 25,000 hours in the middle of the brightness range. It features 12 illumination settings, 10 for daylight conditions and two that are night vision compatible. Magnification is set at 1x.
To recap, the Defender-XL is still available with a 5 or 8 MOA dot (bright red) and the new, smaller 2 MOA dot (SKU: DFXL-MRD2). Defender-XL is parallax-free and features adjustment graduations of 1 MOA, with 25 MOA travel per rotation, a maximum elevation adjustment of 120 MOA, and a max windage adjustment of 115 MOA.
The unit measures 1.4 inches wide and 1.4 inches tall overall, with a length of 2 inches even and overall weight, with battery installed, of 1.93 ounces. It features a DeltaPoint Pro mounting footprint.
Each Defender-XL ships with a Picatinny mount, a custom tool to assist with battery installation and replacement, a protective rubber cover, a screw set to cover most common mounting options, a lens cloth, an included CR2032 battery, and a Glock MOS plate.
