The partnership between ONE Lexington, GALLS®, and Central Bank offered a scholarship competition for a $20K scholarship. The program offers financial support to a Bryan Station High School senior of color who is committed to pursuing a career in criminal justice at a Kentucky college or university.
Lexington, Ken. (March 2022) – Mayor Linda Gorton of Lexington, Kentucky has announced the winner in the “Be the Change” scholarship competition sponsored by GALLS, LLC®, ONE Lexington, and Central Bank. The “Be the Change” scholarship program offers a $20,000 scholarship for a Bryan Station High School senior of color who’s committed to pursuing a career in criminal justice at a Kentucky college or university.
Nola Lewis, a senior at Bryan Station HS, won the scholarship of $20,000.00, renewable every year until she receives her undergraduate degree. Lewis participates in the school’s Homeland, Law & Fire Science pathway, and as of yet, has not chosen her preferred college.
Runner up, Asha Chekanao, also a senior at Bryan Station HS, will receive a one-time scholarship of $10,000.00. Chekanao participates in the high school’s Medical Academy and has chosen Northern Kentucky University as her college.
Mike Fadden, CEO of GALLS, commented, “GALLS is proud to have participated in the ‘Be the Change’ scholarship program. Both Lewis and Chekanao represent the future of public safety, and we feel it is critical to support young men and women entering the public safety sector.”
“I am so proud of Nola and Asha and their commitment to serving our community in the criminal justice and public safety field,” Mayor Gorton said. “This new scholarship provides life-changing opportunities to our community’s next generation of criminal justice and public safety leaders.”
