Magpul dropped another Featured Build while we were away. This one is a custom take on the venerable turkey slayer that has filled the Thanksgiving tables of hearty Americans since before the founding of the country, when the slayer was something more akin to the legendary blunderbuss of yore.
The Magpul version starts with a trusty Remington 870, the no-frills workhorse of the 12-gauge world, and adds a couple… frills.
One component that totally alters the shotgun’s core is the Magpul SGA Stock for Remington. This takes the factory non-adjustable buttstock and adds a bit of utility and functionality, with a textured and ergonomically angled pistol grip portion for positive traction and control and a more comfortable shooting hand position.
The SGA also features adjustable length of pull from 12.3 to 14.3 inches with the included spacers, an anti-slip recoil pad that’s beveled to enable quicker shouldering when the turkeys suddenly take flight (they do fly, don’t they?), and pre-fitted, zero-rise comb that accepts optional 0.25″, 0.50″, and 0.75″ cheek risers (sold separately) for a custom weld.
It also comes with left- and right-side footman’s loops and QD sling swivel compatibility. The SGA is designed as a true drop-in replacement for the 870, installing quickly and easily using simple tools.
Out front, the Turkey Day 870 benefits from an MOE M-LOK Forend for Remington 870, which provides the host gun with M-LOK accessory capability, front and rear handstops to enhance pump actuation, and a narrowed cross section to reduce bulk and prevent snagging. It will not overlap the receiver to enable its use with a shell carrier.
The build also benefits from a Vortex Viper shotgun red dot for quick targeting and a TruGlo “Gobble Stopper” Xtreme choke for Remington.
This Featured Build was topped off with a custom Cerkote job by Capitol Armory in Austin, Texas, a pattern that’s called Vegeta and calls to mind the Vegetato scheme employed by the Italian army.
