We don’t know how we missed it until now, but recently came across the Magpul Builds page in our online travels.
This one immediately caught our ey, the Alaska Guide Gun, is based on a Marlin Model 1985 lever gun from Marlin’s Guide series, and is aptly chambered for the eminent bushwhacking .45-70 cartridge. Of all the other Magpul builds currently featured on the page, this one in particular snagged us because it looks as though it jumped out of the pages of UN12.
Naturally, the 1895 has been outfitted with a few select upgrades. Among them, Magpul’s ELG M-LOK hanguard for 1895 replaces the Marlin’s foregrip with a lightweight, M-LOK compatible polymer unit that enables the use of other accessoriees with a full 12 inches of real estate and slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock.
According to Magpul, the ELG is easily installed that only requires removal of the handguard end cap (and they note it will only fit 1895-pattern guns with said retaining cap). It also features a flared forward end that acts as a handstop and is compatible with Magpul Type 1 and Type 2 rail covers for those times accessories are not needed and a clean look is desired.

The Marlin stock has been replaced with the Magpul ELG M-LOK buttstock to empower lever enthusiasts with adjustable length of pull and comb height to accommodate different shooting styles and a range of optics. It also provides expanded utility over the OEM stock with an internal storage area that features a quiver to hold six additional cartridges (.45-70 Gov’t or 30-30 Win).
The stock can be outfitted with Magpul QD cups for sling mounting and M-LOK slots on the side can be used for further accessories, like an ammo saddle to hold more bullets (as shown here carrying a complement of six Hornady .45-70 Gov’t 250-grain cartridges).
Up top, the 1895’s integrated Pic rail hosts a Vortex Razor HD Gen III 1-10×24 riflescope mounted on an Air Brace cantilever mount.
What really sets the build off though, and ties it all together, is the M81-inspired Woodland camo Cerakote job by Ely Yerian Designs. Regular readers of UN12 might recognize the name, as we have featured a couple of Ely’s person builds in the pages of the magazine. Here’s one built by Violent Art Firearms featuring EYD’s signature topo treatment.
