MPA has hired David Lyell as its new Product Line Manager for the DS Platform, as well as relocated the assembly operation of the DS pistol line to its Comer facility.
Comer, Ga. (January 2022) – MasterPiece Arms (MPA), manufacturer of precision Pistol, BA Rifles and Chassis Systems, is pleased to announce several exciting updates to its popular DS Series Pistol line. The assembly operation of its popular wide-body, double-stack 1911 pistol line will be moved in-house to MPA’s Comer, Georgia manufacturing location from the previous Camilla location. This move will ensure that the same quality assurance and attention to detail that MPA’s bolt action rifles and chassis receive will be given to its world-class pistol line. To support this commitment to quality, MPA has also hired David Lyell to head the DS Platform as its new Product Line Manager. Lyell is an experienced custom pistol builder and USPSA Grandmaster and comes to MPA with 22 years of experience in machining and metalworking.
“I am very excited about joining the MPA team and know I can bring a lot to the DS Series Pistol line. MPA is in a great position to make a huge difference in the race gun market by providing consumers with a high-quality firearm at a very competitive price,” commented Lyell. “Competitive shooting is a very strong passion of mine and I plan on helping to drive the MPA team forward with reliably built race guns that I would be confident to shoot.”
For the past 12 years, Lyell has worked with a small arms manufacturer and has vast experience with advanced CNC manufacturing applications and new product line development. Custom pistol building is a passion of Lyell’s, who has built numerous open and limited race guns for himself and close friends. Having become the “go-to gunsmith” in his area for the local shooters, Lyell has built and experimented with quite a few different race gun setups and has gained invaluable experience of what works and what doesn’t. Currently, a USPSA Grandmaster in the Open Division, Lyell got his start in competitive shooting in the Production Division before moving to the Carry Optics Division where he received his Master classification. Other credits include becoming the 2020 South Carolina State Champion in Open Division, a third-place overall finish at the Area 6 Championship in 2021, and numerous other state and area accolades.
MPA acquired the wide-body, double-stack 1911 pistol line from Freedom Gunworks at the end of 2019, with the DS9 Hybrid Pistol as the first product introduction. The previous owner Bobby Keigans stayed on through the end of 2021 to ensure a smooth transition of the competition-ready pistols.
“We at MasterPiece Arms have built our reputation around our commitment to producing reliable, accurate products purposefully built to meet and exceed our customers’ needs. The impact we have seen our DS product line make upon the market in the 12-plus months since its initial introduction has been humbling. We have a lot of exciting changes happening with production, new personnel, and further product innovation, and we’re looking forward to showing our customers what we have in store for them this year,” commented Phil Cashin, Owner of MasterPiece Arms.

Since building my first AR as a hobbyist several years ago, I’ve gone through several different mindsets when it comes to triggers. When I first started, I didn’t know any better, so a “mil-spec” single stage trigger was what I learned on, and what I knew. Of course when the AR-building bug struck again I did what many builders and hobbyists do – spend a crap ton of money on a bunch of add-ons, attachments, doodads and whiz-bangs, and I ended up with an 8-9 lb rifle with a bunch of stuff I really didn’t need in real life. It looked cool, though.
