When discussing modern crew-served weapons, few systems represent the evolution of battlefield firepower quite like the Colt MK47 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher. Often referred to as the MK47 “Striker,” this advanced grenade launcher brings modern electronics, improved accuracy, and reduced weight to a class of weapons that had remained largely unchanged since the Vietnam War–era Mk19.
One of the MK47’s most notable advantages is its reduced weight. At roughly 39.6 pounds, the launcher is significantly lighter than the legacy Mk19 system, making it easier for infantry teams to transport and deploy in the field. This lighter design allows the weapon to be carried in multiple packs or mounted on tripods and vehicles without the logistical burden traditionally associated with automatic grenade launchers.

Where the MK47 distinguishes itself is in its compatibility with advanced fire-control optics. The launcher can be paired with the Raytheon Lightweight Video Sight (LVS), which integrates a laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, and day/night imaging into a single targeting unit. This system helps operators quickly determine range and calculate firing solutions, improving engagement speed and accuracy when delivering 40mm munitions downrange.
The MK47 feeds from standard linked 40mm high-velocity ammunition and fires from a closed-bolt system, a design choice that improves accuracy compared to earlier open-bolt grenade launchers. With an effective range of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 meters, it allows units to deliver powerful suppressive fire across wide areas.
According to Colt, the MK47 is designed to sustain a firing rate of approximately 320 rounds per minute, providing operators with a high-volume 40mm solution capable of engaging distant targets quickly. Despite its firepower, the system remains relatively portable for a crew-served platform and measures 37 inches in overall length.
The launcher is also engineered for multi-platform deployment, allowing it to be mounted on tripods, remote weapon stations, drones, or unmanned ground vehicles. Colt notes that the system’s balanced construction and durable design focus on reliability and long-term operational service in demanding environments.
Practical serviceability was also considered in the MK47’s design. An integrated round counter helps armorers track weapon usage and maintenance intervals, supporting long-term operational readiness.
While crew-served grenade launchers rarely receive the same attention as rifles or carbines, the MK47 demonstrates how modern engineering can refine a legacy battlefield role—combining powerful 40mm munitions with advanced optics and improved portability.
