Last week we attended the 2014 Special Operations Forces Industry Conference in Tampa, Florida. This year’s conference theme, “Strengthening the Global SOF Network,” focused on providing a forum for military, government, academia, and industry stakeholders to network and discuss current and future challenges and how to best support our Special Operations Forces (SOF) around the globe. With a Proclamation from Mayer Bob Buckhorn, May 19th – 23rd was declared “Special Operations Forces Week” in the City of Tampa, home to USSOCOM at MacDill Air Force Base. The week was filled with senior leader presentations and panels, PEO updates and forecasts, technology and International trade show exhibitions, SOCOM’s annual award presentations, and of course our favorite, the International Special Operations Exercise. SOFIC 2014 is presented by NDIA, the National Defense Industrial Association and was attended by nearly 10,000 participants.
SOFIC is the place to be for doing business with the SOF marketplace. It was also great time to network with colleagues and industry professionals. We specifically enjoyed quality time spent with our friends at Tactical Tailor, David Reeder of Recoil Magazine, Nick Leghorn at The Truth About Guns, Mike Haytack at EAGLElement and our good buddies at Beyond Clothing. These are people and companies who strongly support our military professionals and help provide them with the cutting-edge products and solutions to do the job well.
Special Forces from 16 nations took part in this year’s International Special Operations Exercise, in which Mayor Buckhorn himself played the role of a hostage who would be rescued from a mock enemy village. The demonstration featured an MC-130 military free-fall water jump, MH-60 Blackhawk helocast and fastrope insertions, an MH-6 Littlebird sniper team insertions and armed reconnaissance operation, a SEAL underwater infiltration, and Ground Mobility Vehicle and Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat assaults.
SOFIC 2015 is scheduled to take place again in Tampa on May 19 – 21, 2015. Be sure to visit http://www.sofic.org/ for more information.

Deciding which handgun to purchase can be quite the process, especially if that firearm is going to be used for defense or competition. The handgun itself is usually not a cheap investment and if you are like me, new sights a light, and possibly some other upgrades are usually not too far behind. By the time you get those things accomplished and spend the time training to being able to run that firearm adequately the amount of hours it has spent on your person or in your hand practically makes it part of the family. And the same goes for a holster.
In my pursuit to finish a Cross Machine & Tool (CMT) .308 build, I stumbled on JL Billet, a veteran owned and operated manufacturer based in San Diego, CA. They make some pretty killer looking stuff. Looks aside, I am always concerned with durability and quality, so I set out to put it to the test and share my first hand experience.
