This is Smith & Wesson’s first modern sporting rifle—MSR—style pistol-caliber carbine (PCC), and as such it is easily compatible with many existing MSR parts and accessories. Chambered in 9mm, it has a 23+1 capacity out of the box and ships with two 23-round M&P double-stack magazines. According to the company, its premier feature is the innovative and easy-to-install FLEXMAG system, a design that consists of interchangeable magwell adapters that allow the firearm to operate using a variety of S&W magazines as well as those from other manufacturers. Two FLEXMAG kits are included, compatible with either M&P double-stack or Glock 17/19 magazines.
Loaded with features, the Response includes a 16.5-inch threaded barrel, a polymer handguard with Picatinny-style rail and M-LOK slots, a Magpul MOE SL buttstock, a flat-faced trigger, and an M&P pistol grip with four interchangeable palmswell adapters. Overall length is just over 35 inches and it weighs just under six pounds.
According to Senior Project Manager John Myles: “[It’s] for the PCC shooter who enjoys MSR platforms and prefers interfacing capabilities with various pistol magazines available in the market. Its compatibility with the vast network of MSR aftermarket accessories allows the user to easily customize for specific preferences and needs. Our goal was to deliver a completely versatile pistol caliber carbine that would be a perfect companion to your sidearm. This design is our Response.”
